I loved chatting with Karen about her girls. They were not just the center of her universe; they were it. She was so proud of them, and not simply for the fact that they were her beautiful offspring. In this crazy age of drugs, teen pregnancy, alcohol and drug abuse, it’s nothing short of miraculous that Karen’s girls had never been tempted even to experiment in those areas. Yet their friends will tell you they are always the life of the parties they choose to attend, whether or not solo. The prize – a spot here in Pepperpot and a SHE cosmetics bag. The winner was St Lucia’s Tamica Gaskin. Ms Gaskin is the director of recently launched Doll House Modeling Agency and Promotions. She describes her agency which specializes in advertising, fashion shows, event and party promotion and charity work, as new and bold, where everything is “fun, unique and never plastic.” An excited Tamica said of her win: “I want St Lucia to be one of the main islands to be noticed for its true beauty and talent. My agency is unique because of my own personal style. I love crazy, beautiful, exotic hairstyles and funky clothing, which are very high fashion so my style will definitely be my trademark.” She thanked SHE Caribbean magazine for having the competition and said that she was very proud of her winning style.

Gaye tells SHE how she got there, what she misses about Jamaica and what she does in her ‘ME’ time. What did she think of the industry before she became a model? “I know how I perceived modeling before I started and it’s that it’s a very lackadaisical, glamorous, easy and fun job where you just live the high life and reap all the benefits such as hanging out and partying… “It takes passion, will power and adversity to pursue a career in the fashion industry. I can’t tell you how many nights I have been at a client’s studio until 4am just to get that perfect shot or the 20 castings that I have to run around the city to get to in less than an hour hoping that someone would see my face or walk and say, ‘Yes, that is what I’m looking for.’”
